Ágrip á ensku:
Dr. Martin will present joint empirical work with Christian Grund. They assemble two reference point based on concepts of utility in their empirical study. These reference points include managers´ own previous status quo and the income of their peers with whom they might compare themselves. The authors explore the relative relevance of these concepts for total compensation as well as for different parts of managers´ compensation package. Making use of a unique panel data set of managers in the German chemical sector, they find that social comparisons of compensation do affect reported job satisfaction. Managers compare their total compensation (and fixed salary) with that of others in the chemical sector and report lower satisfaction scores when they earn less than similar managers. Martin and Grund also find evidence for the relevance of status quo preferences with respect to fixed salaries.
