The Northern Lights Confucius Institute and the Institute of Philosophy present the lecture Basic Aspects of Daoist Philosophy by Hans-Georg Moeller in Lögberg 102, October 13th from 15:00-16:15.
This lecture explores three basic conceptions which constitute a foundational framework for Daoist philosophy: a) Daoist non-anthropocentrism or the notion of dao 道 (or tian dao 天道) b) Daoist non-agency or wu wei 無為, and c) the Daoist “acosmotic” notion of ziran 自然. The paper will outline how these three conceptions are developed in the two Daoist “classics” Laozi and Zhuangzi and show how they work in conjunction to open up a philosophical horizon.
Hans-Georg Moeller is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at University College Cork in Ireland. His research focuses on Chinese and Comparative Philosophy and on Social and Political Thought. He is the author of The Philosophy of the Daodejing, The Moral Fool: A Case for Amorality, and The Radical Luhmann (all published by Columbia University Press, New York).
