The research project deals with fisheries management with an overall aim to develop models and simulate the dynamics of fisheries management and compare different management strategies by looking at their impact on selected indicators. The indicators might not only be biological and economical but also social. The research questions stated are:
1. How can time series describing complex dynamics, such as biomass growth of fish, be simulated without being fitted to multi-parameter models, and thus avoiding inevitable assumptions?
2. What are the impacts of various by-catch and discard mitigation measures?
3. What are the economic, social and environmental impacts of changing specific schemes in fisheries management systems?
The main part of it will be done in collaboration with an FP7-EU project, EcoFishMan (Ecosystem-based Responsive Fisheries Management in Europe), which Matís leads. The PhD research is also partly sponsored by another EU project called BADMINTON which is a research project on the practice of discards in fisheries where the aim is to map the amounts of discards and explore and assess mitigation measures.
