Treating obsessive compulsive disorder: Synthesizing theory, research, and practice to enhance clinical care.

Ágrip (á ensku)

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating psychiatric condition. While evidence strongly supports cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention (ERP) as an efficacious intervention for OCD, some patients do not benefit from CBT and many patients do not respond optimally. In light of this, it is of value to identify and incorporate theoretical, clinical and empirical information in order to better individualize treatment and improve the likelihood of patient response. In his talk, Dr. Selles will first provide a brief overview of OCD including its etiology, phenomenology, and treatment. Next, four mechanisms theorized to explain change associated with ERP will be outlined and the clinical implications of each mechanism will be discussed. Dr. Selles will then present his own recent work regarding two factors that relate to the phenomenology and treatment outcomes of pediatric OCD. Specifically, Dr. Selles will discuss the role of insight, sharing data from a mega-analysis of 852 youth with OCD, following which Dr. Selles will present data from two complementary studies examining the role of parent tolerance of child distress. The implications of these research findings, in regard to the optimal management of youth in clinical practice, will also be discussed.
