Mr. Helgi Rafn Hróðmarsson, Science Institute, University of Iceland presents:

The electronic spectra of the hydrogen halides are of particular interest within the spectroscopic community due to the clarity and resolution of their spectral structures as well as the state interactions embedded within as perturbation effects. The spectra provide epitomizing examples of interactions between Rydberg and valence states of varying strength and nature as well as information about various photofragmentation and photoionization pathways. We used mass resolved Resonance Enhanced Multi-Photon Ionization (REMPI) spectra to determine quantitative and qualitative information relevant to state interaction, photofragmentation as well as energetics of HBr and HI and performed a Velocity Map Imaging (VMI) study of HBr coupled with analysis of rotationally and mass resolved REMPI spectra with the focus on the excitation mechanisms involving resonance excitation to the mixed E1Σ+ Rydberg state and the V1Σ+  ion-pair valence state derived from kinetic energy release spectra and angular distributions for resonance excitation to number of vibrational and rotational states.
