One main motivation to study nano-structured systems and, in particular, atomic clusters is the distinct chemical properties that such systems exhibit. Clusters are appealing model systems as technical catalysts commonly are realized as nanometer sized metal particles dispersed on porous metal oxides. In the present contribution, I will discuss implications of reduced system size on chemical properties for metal clusters and thin metal oxide films. Examples will be taken from recent work on metal oxidation where bulk surfaces will be compared to atomic clusters. Furthermore, the case of methane oxidation over thin palladium oxide films will be discussed.
